Week 20- 3.5: “Grandpa’s Corner Store”

News & Calendar:

  • Log your “Reading Days” Homework for last week ASAP if you haven’t already: RTSUtah.com or record in your planner on the January calendar!
  • Our “Box Top” collection continues!  Turn them in to your homeroom bucket.
  • Report cards will come home this Thursday. (But did you know that you don’t need to wait? You can look at your grades anytime online at https://portal.graniteschools.org/! Use your student’s “9 number” to log in.)
  • No Spelling homework or test this week. It is a week of review.
  • Be thinking about which dates work best for you for S.E.P. conferences! They are coming up soon: Tuesday, February 10th during the day, 9-3 p.m.(2nd and 4th grades only); Wednesday the 11th evening from 4-7 p.m.; or Thursday the 12th in the evening between 3-6 p.m. Just FYI, 1st & 3rd grade daytime appointments are on Wednesday, and 5th & 6th Dual Immersion daytime appointments are Thursday morning.

Students will be able to…

… read and comprehend this week’s selection, “Grandpa’s Corner Store,” focusing on the comprehension strategy “Making Connections.”

… learn and use these new vocabulary words: owner, arrangement,  tingle, huddled, sharp, construction, aisles.

… learn to form contractions (A contraction is when two words are put together with some letters taken out; an apostrophe takes the place of the letters that are taken out!)

… read and retell the decodable story #31: “The Museum.”

… read and practice this week’s poem: “Man in the Moon.”

…read two poems that connect to the community “All Around Town” theme that is ending this week: “Supermarket” and “Library.”

…continue to work on our “House is a House” class book.

 

Objectives from our “Imagine It!” Program:

Reading Literature: 

  • I can describe how characters respond to major events and challenges by identifying what they do, say, think, or feel.
  • I can comprehend stories and poems independently.

 

Reading Foundational Skills:

  • I can identify open and closed syllables in words.
  • I can read irregularly spelled words both in isolation and in text.
  • To comprehend, I can identify the purpose of a text, and check my understanding throughout my reading.
  • I can fluently read on-level text focusing on phrasing and chunking.

 

Writing:

  • I can write an opinion/persuasive piece that will introduce the topic, state an opinion and two supporting ideas, use linking words, and provide a concluding statement.
  • I can strengthen my writing by revising and editing content, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • In a group, I can organize and present information on a single research topic.

 

Speaking and Listening:

  • I can follow rules for participating in discussions including listening, asking appropriate questions and staying on topic.

No new spelling words or spelling homework for this week because it is a week of review!

RL 2.3:    Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

RL 2.10:  By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

 

RF 2.3:    Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

RF 2.4:    Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

 

W 2.1:    Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

W 2.5:    With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.

W 2.7:    Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).

 Mystery Question!

Your student will receive a Skyhawk SOAR Ticket if he or she can answer the “Mystery Question” in his or her planner or on a piece of paper sometime before Friday:

 Can you give me an example of a contraction, as well as the two words that it stands for?
